Greinke one-hits Cleveland through 6 in D-backs’ romp

“It was definitely the best outing of the spring,” Zack Greinke said of his six 1-hit innings in Mondays exhibition. “I wish this one counted.” pic.twitter.com/DmV5aA1LAH — FOX Sports Arizona (@FOXSPORTSAZ) March 27, 2018 PHOENIX —Zack Greinke looked ready for the regular season. The Arizona ace pitched one-hit ball over six innings in the Diamondbacks 7-0 exhibition victory over the Cleveland Indians on Monday night. “I wish this one counted,” he said. “… That was definitely the best outing of the spring.” Greinke wont pitch opening day after tightness in his right groin during an outing March 14 threw him off schedule. Barring any setback, he is expected to make his regular-season debut Saturday night in the finale of Arizonas three-game, season-opening series against Colorado. Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb homered off Indians starter Carlos Carrasco. Carrasco, an 18-game winner last season and the No. 2 pitcher in Clevelands rotation, allowed six runs and five hits in four innings. He struck out seven and walked two. “Carrasco started out good,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “Then he got to the fourth inning and he tried to locate instead of trusting his stuff and he kind of paid for it. The good news is its spring training. He came out of it healthy as all get out. Hes raring to go.” Yoshi Hirano makes his entrance via the new bullpen cart. The only other batter to reach base against Greinke did so on a fielders choice. Greinke threw 75 pitches, 55 strikes. He fanned four with no walks. “He controlled the entire environment tonight,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. “He set a great tone for us. We got off to an early lead with the home run and Zack was in typical Zack form — fastballs on both sides of the plate downhill, secondary stuff he went and got anytime he wanted. We had to throw him an extra inning to get to 75 pitches.” Lamb led off the Arizona second with a home run to the right of the swimming pool in right to make it 1-0. After A.J. Pollock led off the fourth with a walk, Goldschmidt hit the first pitch he saw into the left field seats and the Diamondbacks led 3-0. Archie Bradley, Brad Boxberger and Yoshihisa Hirano — the three candidates for the Arizona closers job — each threw a hitless inning. It was the first time the Diamondbacks pitchers encountered baseballs that had been stored in their humidor to try to add moisture in the dry desert air. Torey Lovullo will announce the @Dbacks closer before Tuesdays final exhibition game. Bradley, Boxberger, Hirano each faced the minimum in their respective inning Monday. — FOX Sports Arizona (@FOXSPORTSAZ) March 27, 2018 “I was wondering if that was why some of those balls were pop-ups instead of doubles or something,” Greinke said. “I didnt see how far a couple of our homers went but it was nice seeing that you could still drive the ball.” MARTES MONEY A person close to the situation says infielder Ketel Marte and the Diamondbacks have agreed on a five-year, $24 million extension. The deal includes another two-year club option that could be worth $22 million. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not been announced. Marte filled in well when shortstops Nick Ahmed and Chris Owings went down with injuries a year ago and was 7 for 17 at the plate in four postseason games, including a pair of triples in the wild-card win over Colorado. TRAINERS ROOM Arizona officially placed OF Steven Souza Jr. (pec strain) and RH reliever Randall Delgado (left oblique strain) on the disabled list. UP NEXT The Indians and Diamondbacks play their preseason finale Tuesday in Phoenix. RH Taijuan Walker starts for Arizona, RH Trevor Bauer for Cleveland. Venus Williams exacts revenge to end Johanna Kontas Miami title defence

Kontas title defence was ended (Picture: AP) Venus Williams fought back from a set down to end Johanna Kontas defence of her Miami Open to advance to the quarter-finals. The American was dumped out in the semi-finals by the Brit in 2017 but exacted her revenge in style to move into the last-eight with a 5-7 6-1 6-2 win in two hours and 20 minutes. Konta, who struggled with a back issue in the latter stages of the contest, had been in impressive form in the build-up to the clash with the world No. 8 but after a bright start, the defending champion fell away. The defeat will see her drop outside the top-20 for the first time since May 2016 and continues a largely disappointing start to this season. More: Tennis Williams came through against the Brit (Picture: USA TODAY Sports) Though Konta beat the eighth seed on her way to the title in Florida last year, she had since lost to Williams in Rome and Wimbledon as part of a tight 3-3 head-to-head. After holding to love, the Brit continued to turn the screw, creating four break point chances in a marathon third game, but the experienced American held firm to get on the board. When 5-4 up Williams forced a set point on the Konta serve but the 26-year-old battled through before breaking the seven-time Grand Slam champion to take a one-set lead. As Williams stormed to a 6-1 second set to set up a decider, Konta called out the trainer, seemingly struggling with her lower back. The Brit was broken at the beginning of the third but and though she quickly levelled at 2-2, Williams reeled off the next four games to book her spot in the next round. American qualifier Danielle Collins will take on Olympic gold medal winner Monica Puig later in the day to determine who Williams next opponent will be. Stephens took out Muguruza (Picture: AP) Kerber was forced to work hard (Picture:USA TODAY Sports) Earlier on Monday, Garbine Muguruza was taken out 6-3 6-4 by US Open champion Sloane Stephens and she will face Angelique Kerber in the last-eight after the German fought back from a set down to beat Chinas Wang Yafan 6-7 7-6 6-3. Fifth seed Karolina Pliskova advanced as Zarina Diyas retired when 6-2 2-1 down and she will take on three-time champion Victoria Azarenka, who beat Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2 6-2, with Elina Svitolina also booking her spot in the quarter-finals with a 7-5 6-4 win over Ash Barty. Fultz returns to lineup for 76ers

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Markelle Fultz will return to the Philadelphia 76ers lineup on Monday. Coach Brett Brown made the surprise announcement before the Sixers game against Denver. Fultz, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2017 draft, will come off the bench. Fultz played the 76ers first four games of the season but has been sidelined since. Fultz was ruled out indefinitely in October with soreness and a scapular muscle imbalance in the shoulder. The team announced Dec. 9 the soreness was gone, the imbalance had been resolved, and he was going to participate in ”elevated on-court basketball activities.” Then on Jan. 2, the team announced Fultz had been cleared to begin the final stage of his ”return-to-play program.” Fultz averaged 6 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists in his four games this season.
