NRL referees will be told to penalise players who deliberately throw away the boot of an opponent after Ben Hunt's cheeky act riled NSW coach Brad Fittler during the State of Origin series opener.
Head of football Graham Annesley has spoken with Fittler after Hunt flung Boyd Cordner's boot out of the field of play, forcing the Blues captain to play several minutes with only one boot during NSW's loss at Suncorp Stadium.
Fittler didn't see the funny side of the incident, declaring to referees boss Bernard Sutton he would coach his players to rip the boots off Queensland rivals if it came without sanction. Cordner was even forced to kick the ball at one stage minus a boot.
The NRL has reacted swiftly and will now penalise any player who repeats the act. It will be in place when NSW try to save the Origin series in Perth next week.
