Sheriff Clarke: Politics Has Become a ‘Blood Sport’
Wisconsin Sheriff David Clarke stepped off the stage of a Roy Moore barn rally in Midland, Alabama, on Monday night to join Breitbart News Tonight on SiriusXM Patriot 125, where he called out the Republican and Democratic “ruling class” for weaponizing the government and turning politics into a “blood sport.”
Host Stephen K. Bannon asked Clarke if he was prepared for the intensity and “nastiness” of the race in Alabama, “how low it got?”
“Yes and no,” he said. Clarke explained that he said yes because politics has become “a blood sport.”
“It’s no longer about this ‘energizing voters’ and getting voters to understand what you’re about and have them go out and make their selection on election day, it’s about destroying your opponent,” lamented Clarke.
“One thing you find out in times like this, you find out who your friends are,” Clarke said. “Amen,” replied Bannon.
Clarke drew a parallel between attacks on Moore in this Senate race and attacks on then-candidate Donald Trump during the 2016 election, “it was the same thing. The establishment class and what they’ll do to protect the status quo.”
“This establishment class in Washington, DC, they lord over us,” said Clarke, adding that while the Constitution says the people are in charge, that class has flipped things. “It’s called hanging on to power.”
He said there wasn’t much difference between Republicans and Democrats in the “ruling class.”
“What they saw in Donald Trump as an outsider to come and start flipping over tables,” said Clarke, a nod to Jesus turning over the moneychangers’ tables in the Temple and chastising those people for turning the Temple into a “den of thieves.”
Clarke said the same thing is happening with Moore as happened with Trump, two men who are not “one of them,” the ruling class, someone “outside of their elitism” who will remind them of the Constitution and the “rule of law.”
The sheriff said those in the D.C. “bubble” are “so disconnected from places like this here in the heart of Alabama … What’s important to them is not important to people on the ground.”
He said this establishment class thinks that they’re “smarter than us.” Clarke conceded that they “have their hands on the levers of power.”
“This isn’t about one election, this isn’t about a couple of elections, it’s going to take a long time,” he said, speaking to a long-term fight. “But at least we stopped their momentum in November,” he said speaking of the 2016 presidential election.
“They’ve taken institutions of this government and they’ve weaponized it,” said Clarke, who said it’s being done in plain sight, that the establishment class isn’t afraid, “they do not care.”
Clarke evidenced his statement by citing the IRS, under then President Barack Obama, targeting conservative groups, and the gun running scandal Fast and Furious that ran under then-Attorney General Eric Holder’s Department of Justice. He later cited independent counsel Bob Mueller’s investigation, calling it “corrupt.”
“Now they’re using those things against the American people,” said Clarke, “that’s the thing that scares me the most, is the corruption is so deep within our government from top to bottom, the White House under Obama … it’s going to take a very long time.” Clarke said at some point the American people are going to have to stand up.
The sheriff believes that history will look back on this period of time as “a very dark period of time.”
Alabama voters will go to the polls on Tuesday to choose whether Republican Roy Moore or Democrat Doug Jones will fill the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by now-U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
