Facebook chief has no plans to meet British MPs

LONDON — Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg has “no plans” to meet a committee of British MPs, the social media giant said in a letter published Tuesday.

The chairman of the digital, culture, media and sport select committee Damian Collins threatened to issue a formal summons to Zuckerberg earlier this month after the Facebook boss turned down an initial invitation to give evidence.

Rebecca Stimson, head of public policy for Facebook in the U.K., said in a letter to Collins that the Facebook founder had no plans to travel to the U.K. “at present.”

Collins said in a statement issued to journalists that the committee would be “open” to taking evidence from Zuckerberg by video link.

The Facebook letter was a response to 39 “outstanding questions” issued by Collins and his committee after Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer gave evidence to its inquiry into “fake news” and the Cambridge Analytica scandal in April.
